How Shoutcast bit rate qualities stack up
  • 32kps - AM radio quality
  • 64kps - FM radio quality
  • 96kps - Common internet radio
  • 128kps - High quality
  • 192kps - CD / Higher quailty

The quailty of the audio that your listeners hear depends directly on the the bit rate of your audio stream. The basic rule is that the higher the bit rate, the higher the quailty of the audio. Since Shoutcast uses MP3 as its audio format, the bit rate qualities of MP3 translate into how the Shoutcast stream sounds. A few common values are listed on the right. 96kps is generally the most common bit rate used as it provides an excellent balance between quailty and price.
